George Sorocold, Derby Water Engineer
Location of Derby's First Water Pumping Station
The coloured map (courtesy Derby Local Studies Library) is dated 1852 and the location of Derby's first water works is shown in pink. The accompanying 1883 map shows the location of the premises in better detail and is on St Michael's Lane Derby. There would be a water wheel situated in-between each of the Corn Mills. The pump was situated in the Corn Mill shown in the centre of the map. The eastern Corn Mill is the Silk Mill and is the only building to remain. (2014) For comparison see the satellite image on the next slide.

A water wheel drives a pump which extracts river water (Derwent) and pumps it via elm pipes to a cistern (tank) on top of the tower of St Michael.s Church. From there water gravitates to properties via elm water mains laid in the road.
